What Is a Cock Ring?
A cock ring is a ring that you place at the base of your penis to keep blood from flowing back out. This can make your erection stronger and last longer, and it might also make you more sensitive. While the FDA and some medical institutions even recommend cock rings for men who can get but not keep their erections, you can still benefit from using one even if you don’t have erection problems.

Some people only wear cock rings around the base of their penis, while others wear them around the penis and balls. Cock rings can have separate compartments for the cock and balls, or you might use a single ring around both. The best cock ring is the one that you find comfortable and pleasurable.
Different types of cock rings can also offer different benefits or features.
Types of Cock Rings
- Circular: Most cock rings fall into this category, although there are differences in thickness, texture, and material, the latter of which we’ll discuss later. Most rings are fully enclosed, but some may have a gap, making them more flexible and easier to put on and take off.
- Strap: wrap around the shaft and secure, usually by snaps.
- Lasso/adjustable: can be made more snug or loose with a sliding adjuster. May have more than one loops for shaft and scrotum.
- Figure-8/multiple rings: have multiple compartments for penis and balls. You may even be able to fit a vibrator through one compartment for additional stimulation.
- Triple cock rings: usually rigid. The widest ring sits at the base of the penis and scrotum while the balls slip through the bottom ring and you push the penis through the upper ring.
- Cock sling: a wider ring with loops for both the penis and testicles. The ring for the balls is known as a ball stretcher.
- Vibrating: includes a small vibrator for self-stimulation or partner stimulation (usually clitoral).
- Sleeved: has a sleeve that goes over the shaft while the ring stays at the base.
- Cages: place the penis (and sometimes balls) in bondage to prevent erection and/or orgasm (they work well for femdom games).
- Probes and plugs: include an anal attachment for the wearer. Tips for having great anal sex.
- Erection rings: are worn specifically to help with erectile dysfunction.
More advanced styles can be used for bondage (light bondage ideas).
How Cock Rings Improve Sex
A penis ring can make sex better by potentially helping you last longer or feel more sensitive. A stronger, larger sex drive might make sex feel better for partners, too, and any vibration will usually enhance it. The material, weight, and texture can also be stimulating.
For some people, cock rings make sex better for mental reasons more than physical ones. They might feel more confident or even love the taboo aspect of using a sex toy. If they’re using a vibrating cock ring, stimulating their partners can also be a benefit of using a cock ring.

The Risks of Using Cock Rings
Discomfort is a risk of using a cock ring for too long or one that’s too small. Abrasions and bruising can also happen [1, 3].
The biggest risk comes from choosing a cock ring that is too small or wearing it too long, which can prevent blood from leaving the penis. The official term for getting a cock ring stuck is penile ring entrapment (PRE), and it’s most likely to occur with a metal cock ring [2]. This is likely due to the rigid material being more restrictive and harder to remove when stuck.
Improper use can lead to swelling that requires the cock ring to be cut off or blood or tissue removed from the penis. This can damage the muscles, veins, skin, and urethra in and around the penis and testicles. Soft tissue injuries may require treatment or repair, including a temporary catheter and/or a skin graft. In the worst-case scenario, getting stuck in a cock ring could result in gangrene or even require penile amputation [3].
If you can’t get a cock ring off, it’s essential to seek medical treatment immediately to prevent permanent damage.
Fortunately, over 80% of people who seek emergency medical help for a stuck cock ring were treated or examined at the ED and then released [4].
Choosing a Cock Ring
To ensure you have a good time when using a cock ring, choose the right one for you.
Materials
Soft cock rings are usually made from stretchy silicone, TPE, TPR, or PVC jelly. Silicone cock rings are the most body-safe because they’re nonporous and will not break down over time.
Soft, stretchy rings are ideal for beginners because they’re affordable, and you don’t need to know the exact size of your penis. You can often find them in packs of two or three sizes, which helps you find the right fit. Different textures and colors are common with stretchy cock rings.
A soft cock ring is typically easier to put on and take off than a rigid one (especially if you need to cut it off in an emergency), but the material could attract lint and potentially pull on your hair.
Rigid cock rings are usually made from metal but may also be glass, stone or wood. With the exception of wood, they weigh more than soft rings, which some people like. Others might enjoy them for their appearance, and glass and metal can come in different colors.
Textures usually feel more intense with rigid materials, but metal rings are often smooth. Glass and metal are more responsive to temperature than soft materials and will adapt to body heat. You can use cool or warm water for temperature play, too.
Adjustable and strap cock rings can include those with snaps (often leather) or adjusters and may be made from soft silicone. Leather cock rings are neither perfectly rigid nor soft, although they have straight edges, which is uncommon with other types of cock rings.
Adjustable or soft cock rings might be preferable if your penis isn’t perfectly round.
Size
Cock rings are either measured in circumference, the length all the way around the inside of the ring, or diameter, the length from one side to the other.
To measure your penis for a cock ring, you can use a fabric tape measure or just a piece of string around the base of the fully erect penis (or around the penis and scrotum). The total length is the circumference. Divide your measurement by 3.14 (Pi) to find the approximate diameter. Choose a ring with a similar diameter.
While soft rings stretch to fit various penises, you must be more precise when picking a rigid ring and cannot use one that’s smaller than the circumference and/or diameter of your penis.
Vibration
Using a vibrating cock ring is similar to a soft ring with the addition of a vibrating attachment. They may be single-use, battery-powered, or rechargeable. Rechargeable vibrators are likely to last longer and have stronger vibrations. This last fact is important if you or your partner dislike buzzy vibrations, which can feel ticklish.
Read: How to use a vibrator for stronger orgasms.
A larger vibrator/bullet or one that’s perpendicular to the ring is typically better at consistently stimulating the clitoris, especially if there’s a gap between your clitoris and vagina. Remember that a cock ring might move away from your clit as your partner pulls away when thrusting.
Vibrating rings might only offer one level of vibration or different modes. They might be controlled by a button on the ring itself or a remote.
How to Use a Cock Ring
Trim or Remove Hair – This optional step can be helpful to prevent yourself from tugging on hair (and the skin it’s attached to) when putting on a cock ring. Trimming hair might be enough.
Start Semi-erect – Put on a cock ring when you’re semi-erect, neither fully hard nor soft. This helps keep it in place while minimizing the chance that the ring is much too small.
Use Lube – We always recommend using lube to make putting on a cock ring easier. Use just enough to make it smoother but not so much that you can’t get it in place or that it slips off.
Putting on a Cock Ring – Once you’ve applied lube on the ring (or your penis, if you prefer), slide the cock ring to the base of your penis. If it fits well, it should stay in place during masturbation or sex without you needing to adjust it.
If you want to place the ring around your balls, too, stretch the ring once it’s on the base of your penis and carefully push each testicle through it. This is true whether using a single ring or one with a separate compartment for the balls. Place any additional rings over the penis after the initial ring.
When using an adjustable cock ring, you can put it in place and secure it so that it fits snugly or even put it on loosely before tightening. For any specialty cock ring, you may be able to read or watch a tutorial to learn how to put on and use the cock ring comfortably. Fortunately, many makers and retailers offer videos for this exact purpose!
Check for Fit – Cock rings should feel snug but not painful. You should be able to gently squeeze the base of your penis to move blood through the cock ring. If it hurts, a bulge forms, your penis turns purple, or you can’t move blood through, take it off. You need a bigger cock ring.
Some people use the 1-2-3 finger guidelines for determining how tight a cock ring should be.
- A cock ring is too small if you can only fit one finger (up to the second knuckle) between it and your penis.
- A cock ring fits well if you can fit two fingers between it and your penis.
- A cock ring is too big if you can fit three fingers between it and your penis.
If using a cock ring with a condom, put the condom on after to avoid tearing.
Do not use any cock ring that causes pain.
Tips for Using and Wearing Cock Rings
Remember that wider bands can feel snugger than thinner ones. You may want a larger cock ring if it’s thicker than what you’re used to.
You’ll wear a larger cock ring around your cock and balls than you would around just your cock.
Entrapment leading to gangrene. This is why professionals recommend only wearing a cock ring no longer than 30 minutes [1].
Ideally, wearing a cock ring feels snug without causing any pain or discomfort.
Finally, you might not find that wearing a cock ring is painful or uncomfortable, but it might not be all that much fun, either. That’s perfectly okay! Cock rings aren’t for everyone. You can try other sex techniques like eating your partner’s pussy, giving a great blow job or just trying something kinky during sex.
